Chapter 6

Friends and Moments

Sydney is just finishing up her last bite of breakfast in the kitchen as Grace takes it from her and places it into the dishwasher. Sam is standing at kitchen counter shuffling some papers and finishing his cup of coffee, before heading in to work. Sam turns to look at Sydney for a moment.

“Mom says things are going great at school, huh?”

“Yes, quite well” Sydney says getting up from the table.

“She is going to hang out with some friends this afternoon.” Grace says, joining the conversation.

“Adalia?” Sam asks.

“And some others.” Grace adds quickly trying to divert Sam away from having to tell him about Ali.

“Who, others?” Sam asks, taking his last sip of coffee.

“Oh, just some new friends.” Grace says, taking Sam’s cup from him.

Sam walks over to Sydney and gives her a kiss on the head.

“Well, have fun and a good day at school. Don’t forget,” Sydney cuts him off.

“I know, no running.”

“Good answer. Got to run.” Sam says, kissing Grace on the mouth and grabbing his papers.

“Do you have to do that in front of me?” Sydney says grossed out that her parents are kissing in front of her.

“Bye girls” Sam says leaving the kitchen.

“Bye, dad. Love you” Sydney says as he disappears. There is momentary silence while Sydney waits to hear for the front door to close, before turning to Grace.

“You just lied to dad.”

“Not really, I just forgot his name right at that moment” Grace replies, smiling, excusing her deliberate faux pas.

“Can we go now? I don’t want to be late.” Sydney says, picking up her backpack.

“My, aren’t we in a rush to get to school today.” Grace smiles, recognizing Sydney’s excitement for the day ahead.

Grace wipes her hands on the hand towel at the sink and picks up her purse, foraging for her keys in the depths of it ushering Sydney ahead as she pulls out her keys.

“Okay, let’s get on the road.”

It is the middle of the day and Carlos Ramos is parked in the upper level of a parking garage, next to him sits Pancho, his driver. Juan walks up to the passenger side window and Carlos winds it down. Carlos is not happy that Juan has called him up to meet in the middle of the day.

“I thought I told you never to use that phone unless it was to call me about a fight. That phone is mostly for me to call you.”

“I’m sorry Mr. Ramos, but this is important.” Juan tries to justify his failure to follow the rules.

“Sorry, my ass. I should cut you off for that. If I started making exceptions for all you fighters, you’d just start doing whatever the hell you want. However, fortunately for you, you make me good money, so I’m willing to overlook it this time.” Carlos waves his hand. “Speak.”

“I need your help Mr. Ramos.” Juan begs.

“You get in trouble?” Carlos asks.

“I need more money for the fights, please.” Juan begs. Carlos is incensed that Juan would actually try to get more money.
